As a master repertoire coach, I specialize in finding the perfect song to show off your voice in your next audition. Choosing a song for an audition is an art and no one has more experience or knowledge of musical theatre repertoire to help with your repertoire. This is just one more reason why you will find my clients on Broadway, National Tours, World Tours, Cruise Lines and in music/musical theatre programs at every major university around the world! I know how to match your voice and the goals you have in each audition to the perfect song!
- You must love the song! If you love the song, it will show all over your face during an audition. If you don’t love the song, it will show all over your face during an audition. Go with the song your love, because that’s where the magic lies.
- The song must fit your type (i.e. your energy, your strengths, your vocal qualities, your vocal range, etc). This shows that you know your voice, you know the industry and you are a consummate professional.
- Choose a song that has a story/text that you can connect with emotionally. When you are emotionally grounded to the text of the song, you will be authentic in your delivery. You cannot underestimate the power and persuasion of authentic delivery of a song.
- You must be able to master the song in the time frame you have available. By “master the song”, I mean you should be able to sing that song a capella (no accompaniment), while a marching band passes by your window, a song plays on the radio in a completely different key, while you dance to the latest Beyonce choreography. If any of that makes you doubt your ability to deliver the song, then you should look at other song options.
There’s a lot more that goes into song selection (i.e. era, genre, tempo, etc), but this is a great start and I have the knowledge and expertise to help you wrap up a masterful audition book or just choose the perfect song for your next audition.
